Fishing Reports

June 2008

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

June was a fabulous month of fishing for the clients of the "Krista" with a lot of yellowfin up to 150 lbs., mahi-mahi, shortnose spearfish and wahoo for everyone. The wahoo run is still going strong as I write this report and the summer run of giant yellowfin tuna season is upon us. Just yesterday a 226 lb. yellowfin was weighed in at the Kona weigh station and many more in the 100 lb. class were caught. The famed "Blue Marlin" have arrived and finally the smaller males (120 lb. - 200 lb.) have shown up too and are giving our anglers lots of action. We hosted the Hartman family of San Diego, California towards the end of June and they were rewarded with a 585 lb. Blue Marlin for their son Hunter as well as a trophy wahoo for Troy, the dad. Also, we released an estimated 800 lb. Blue Marlin two weeks ago for Bowen Diehl after a tough 35 minute battle. July shows to be developing into an awesome month and we suspect August will provide much of the same type of action so don't delay in reserving a date for an adventure you'll never forget.

Call us or e- mail us today and we'll take care of the details.

Until next month remember............. "Tight Lines"!

June 2008

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

Here's a story for your Friday the 13th optimists.  Bowen and Lale Diehl joined us for their second trip of the week aboard the Krista in hopes of catching the fish of the lifetime in Kona.  After a non-successful "live-bait" trip on Wednesday morning and hearing tales of huge fish swimming in Kona waters, the Diehl's decided to give it one more try on Friday the 13th. Bowen asked me if I was superstitious and I said that there were some things in life which I felt had some substance but that Friday the 13th wasn't one of them in fact, the number "13" has always been considered my lucky number.  We agreed to try another 6 hour trip on Friday afternoon after my morning half day trip has finished.

We decided that we would troll the entire time and cover water and my deck-hand Tramaine and I decided on a spread.  The spread was a big fish spread and included two Joe Yee super plungers on the corners, a Bomboy locknut on the long-rigger, a medium Joe Yee plunger on the short rigger and my always on the stinger "Allan Liftee" malolo.  We left at 11:30 and hoped that the 1:17 p.m. high tide would produce a big bite.  At 2:08 p.m. the stinger ripped out of the clip and the Shimano 80-W was screaming line.  All that could be seen from it's original position was a huge hole!  The spellbound was near by when the huge blue marlin came out of the water and started its series of jumps and charges at the Krista.  The Krista maneuvered on her prey with the speed and agility of an Indy race car and we were able to stay on top of this fish for 50 minutes applying enough pressure to keep her tight.

Our angler displayed great strength and stamina for 40 minutes but the last 10 minutes almost proved too much for him.  Tramaine had to help with some of the final cranks of the handle and then the leader was there at the transom.  The massive fish measured greater than the beam of the transom (12' 6") and she was thick and deep with a bill that looked to be easily 3' 4' long.  I jumped down from the bridge and applied a NMFS tag in her shoulder and just then the leader broke and she was gone!  Lale was able to capture some incredible transom photo shots and the big glade swam away to spawn more of her beautiful and powerful species.  A bitter-sweet ending to a magnificent battle on the Krista!  Oh, if you are wondering how there could be a "bitter" part to this story, well when the tag was placed and the leader broke, we lost my favorite "Allan Liftee" malolo lure.  I hope to convince Allen to gift me another one of his 6" pearl/jet malolo baits!

May 2008

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

May has been absolutely outstanding for wahoo, mahi-mahi, yellowfin tuna and shortnose spearfish. The Blue Marlin, striped marlin and black marlin haven't come into our waters in any great numbers but there have been a half dozen or so being caught each week by our charter fleet and some of our recreational boaters here in Kona. The "Krista" and her crew have been "on fire" this month landing many pelagic "flag fish" for their customers during the past month. In fact, we are currently holding an 850% average during the past 29 trips. Yesterday we caught and released 2 beautiful 40# - 50# shortnose spearfish and 2 mahi-mahi in the 15# range. We also caught 15 tuna ranging in size from 5#'s to 10#'s around an offshore buoy.

Summer is nearly here and for Kona, that translates to warm, calm waters with lots of fish close to shore. Hopefully you've made reservations to fly over and do some fishing while you are vacationing. Give us a call (808) 960-5900 or shoot us an e-mail as we still have a few good dates left ion our charter calendar. Hope to see you here in Kona and have a great summer!

April 2008

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

April has come and gone and there were some great fishing days here in Kona especially for mahi-mahi, wahoo, small tuna, shortnose spearfish and huge marlin. We managed to get out 21 days during this past month and had many memorable trips including 21 mahi-mahi in one day, a 57# wahoo for one of our clients and 17 shortnose spearfish. The water temperature is up to 70 degrees and there is a tremendous assortment of bait fish in our waters right now. We recently
acquired a "Greenstick" which now allows us to join some of the other successful boats sticking big yellowfin on a more consistent basis.

The Kona tournaments are just around the corner and we need some more teams to round out our participation this year so give us a call or send us an e-mail and we'll get you involved with the excitement of tournament
fishing. Book your summer trip early as the calendar is filling up and we don't want to miss out on getting you and your friends on board.

Take care and remember...................."Keep 'Em Tight!!

March 2008

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

March was an absolutely banner month with many shortnose spearfish and schooling mahi-mahi showing up in our waters. Our water temperature finally warmed up to 78 degees and the small baitfish arrived in numbers with the targeted pelagics right behind them. We have had 19 straight charters where we have had our passengers catch flag fish and displayed our colors proudly back at the harbor. Many small striped marlin and a sprinkling of blue marlin also made their presence known and we had many excited anglers enjoy the fight of these remarkably strong game fish. There was even a 1251 lb. Pacific
Blue Marlin caught towards the end of this month by one of our renowned skippers and we certainly know there are more of these "Beasts" entering our warm Kona waters in the months ahead.

It's time to reserve your fishing date for this coming summer so don't waste time, call me right away and reserve your date. Check our monthly calendar for open dates and we'll make sure we reserve one for you. Hope to see you in Kona for an exciting day on the water with Capt. "D" and co-captain Tramaine.

February/March 2008

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

February was a very difficult month for fishing top water pelagics as there was a large band of cold water that entered our waters in late January and stayed until the last week of February. Things have changed dramatically since the last week in February and we are seeing the signs we have longed for for quite sometime. Bait schools, flying fish and predators are in our waters and the sea surface temperature has risen to 78 degrees. Yesterday, February 29, 2008, saw one of our new anglers Derek Yorkshire of Edmonton, Canada successfully land an estimated 650# Pacific Blue Marlin after a heated 22 minute battle on 80# test. She was an absolutely beautiful fish that fought in typical big fish fashion ripping out 200 yards of line and then giving us a demonstration of aerial acrobatics that will be a lasting impression upon our anglers. A beautifully placed identification tag was placed in her shoulder and she was released in good shape to fight another day. We also had another angler in February subdue a healthy 105# amberjack from the depths of the Kona coast. Our 105 lb. amberjack now leads this year's list of big fish in that category. We know that fishing is going to continue to progressively develop as the year unfolds and we sincerely hope that you choose our operation for your next fishing adventure. Contact us for reservations and we will show you a trip you'll remember forever!

January 2008

Aloha and Happy New Year!

January has entered this new calendar year with a fervor here in Kona, Hawaii. Lots of the exotic shortnose spearfish up to 50#'s showing up in our pattern and yellowfin in the 100# - 170# range showing up in the offshore spotted dolphin pods. Also we have already seen evidence of the new year ocean currents bringing in some large "floaters" where mahi-mahi and yellowfin tuna in the 25# - 65# range are showing. The Stewart family from Michigan joined us on January 2nd for a full day of fishing and were rewarded with a shortnose spearfish and yellowfin and mahi-mahi fillets to take back home. This month has also been extremely pleasant weather-wise with 2' - 3' seas and trade winds in the 7 mph - 12 mph range making for a
wonderful day on the water as well. We hope to see you this year fishing on board the beautiful 40' Topaz "Krista" so make your reservations early. Hope your new year is filled with lots of days on the water and a lot of cooperative fish too!

November 2007

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

Happy Thanksgiving and we sincerely hope that there are many wonderful fishing experiences to be thankful for and many more ahead. Well October was a very SLOW month in Kona waters but November has shaped up to be a great month for small yellowfin tuna and skipjack tuna on light tackle. We've had an absolute "blast" catching these feisty gamefish on 10# and 20# gear and an occasional Mahi-Mahi have greeted our passentgers as well. No billfish this month but we did have a shot at a couple that simply wouldn't stick. Bottom fishing is superb right now with many 20# -40# amberjacks coming up as well as grey snapper, bluefin trevally, red snapper and some other exotic bottom dwelling species. Great table fish and wonderful to catch. We are looking for the return of our elusive blue marlin and there have already been a couple of fish over 500#'s returned to our scales at Honokohau harbor. (Too Bad they had to die!!). Well we hope that you have an opportunity to get over to our beautiful Island this winter season as I know we are in for a great season.

Take care, tight lines and God Bless!

September/October 2007

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

Fishing has been so good the past two months that I hadn't had a chance to post our report............Sorry for being late!! In any event, the Blue marlin finally appeared in fair numbers and we had some phenominal trips including quite a number of trips with multiple Blue marlin catch and releases. The largest estimated Blue was 450 lbs. caught by our return angler John Alioto and another trip where we caught an estimated 300 lb. Blue and a 200 lb. specimen for Joe & Marsha Morrisey. The Rezbek's came back for their annual Sept./Oct. trip with Capt. "D" and we decided to go out to the "Tsunami" buoy
which is 30 miles west of our harbor. On the way out we caught Ron a beautiful 350 lb. Blue Marlin which we tagged and released with great photos to remember this catch. At the buoy we found plenty of mahi- mahi in the 15 lb. to 30 lb. range and some small Bigeye tuna in the 15 lb. to 20 lb. range. Great fun and perfect weather!! Joe Kalman and his wife Judy joined us in late September for their annual fishing trip and Joe ended up catching the largest mahi-mahi of the year weighing in at 57#'s. Great fish and a fine angler as well!

October was a bit slower on the fishing for Blue marlin and yellowfin tuna but the mahi-mahi were in our waters lured by floating debris from some heavy weather generated to the west of the Islands. Nearly every trip produced good numbers of mahi-mahi and our dear friends Michele and Dan Gillman scored big time. We caught an estimated 250# Blue marlin and 22 mahi-mahi in two days of fishing and most of our anglers following their departure were rewarded with a few mahi-mahi
too! Our November calendar is wide open right now and the fishing is historically good during this month for wahoo, mahi-mahi and smaller Blue marlin. Don't waste time if you are planning a trip, book us now for a fishing trip you'll never forget!

July/August 2007

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

Summer has nearly ended but our spectacular Hawaii game fish evidently haven't heard the news as of this writing. Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin tuna, Wahoo and many other exotic species continue to flourish in our tropical waters and there is no sign that good fishing will be subsiding any time soon. All of the summer tournaments brought great results and fantastic winnings for those of us who were lucky enough to "stick" the fatty. Our waters are still extremely plentiful with baitfish and the surface temperatures hovering everyday around 80 degrees. Good calm water, lots of bait and summer temperatures can assure you that your next trip to Kona will be a memorable one. Call us now for your late summer booking and hook-up to one of our quality game fish aboard the beautiful 38' Topaz "Krista".

June 2007

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

Well June has come and gone but there were many wonderful days spent during that month reeling in big fish! We caught a total of four large "Ahi" in June with the largest weighing in at 143#'s. The ahi started to make their presence known towards the middle of the moth with quite a few charter boats getting "blind" strikes and now they are here in abundance. The Blue Marlin fishing was good too with ten tallied for the Krista in June and one striped marlin to go along with the catch. The "Krista" also tallied the year's largest amberjack on rod and reel with a whopping 107# specimen. The weather has been calm and the baitfish showing up in abundance. We still have some openings in our summer fishing charter calendar so be sure to contact us to get "hooked up"! Have a great July and we hope you catch your trophy fish.

May 2007

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

May was a great month for the "Krista " and its crew with 15 great days of fishing and some very unique catches. Our 184 lb. yellowfin tuna which was caught on a rather lightweight 20# test outfit will go down as the "Catch Of The Month". Mr. Kevin Tibbits and his daughter Brittany had requested a morning 3/4 day trip on board the Krista with light tackle being the tackle of choice (20# and 30# tackle maximum). We decided to focus on wahoo, small tuna and mahi-mahi and stayed in our relatively shallow waters to target these fish. At about 9:30 am in about 210' of water we were rewarded with a spectacular strike from what everyone thought was a huge wahoo. After a back-breaking 30 minute battle, using one of our 20# Shimano stand-up rods and reels, Kevin subdued his remarkable 184# yellowfin tuna. (See photo in our gallery section). Definite proof that you can catch trophy fish in Kona within 1/4 mile of the shoreline!! Kevin missed the "Mens" IGFA world record by 29 lbs.!! Kevin is getting one of his indoor walls in his home ready for this great reproduction mount of his catch!
In other memories of last month's fishing adventures, we managed to satisfy most of all our guests with great times and good fishing including some exotic shortnose spearfish, mahi-mahi, small tuna and a huge (estimated at 1,000 lbs +) Pacific Blue Marlin that eventually got away. The water temperature off our coast right now is in the low 80's and the waters are calm and the air temperatures comfortable. June promises to be an exciting month for us on board the "Krista" as our waters continue to warm and our migrating populations of yellowfin tuna and blue marlin continue to move closer to our shores. Yesterday (6/5/07) was great proof of what we may have in store this month as we subdued the largest amberjack to date
with a 109# specie caught by Bryn Carson of Southern California. Her catch was made on a Penn International 50# outfit. Great job Bryn and we look forward to your return to the Big Island for some blue marlin fishing! Don't forget to book your trip for our summer months right away as our reservation calendar is filling quickly. That's about it for now and tune in for our June report coming up in a few weeks!

April 2007

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

April was a phenomenally good month for all of our pelagics. We saw many mahi-mahi during the month ranging in size from 15#'s to 40#'s and a good number of ono (wahoo) starting to make their annual trek to the Hawaiian Islands. They are currently ranging in size from 18#'s up to some in the 50# class. Great fighting fish and absolutely delicious. Blue marlin, striped marlin and shortnose spearfish also showed up in our waters and our biggest for the month came on a 2-fish day with Mr. Payman Rajimian of Kona, Hawaii. Payman was successful in tagging and releasing a 130# Blue Marlin in the morning and later that day he caught a magnificent 530# Blue Marlin to fill his day with many great memories. The yellowfin tuna are here as well and we just recently nearly beat a 25 year record by catching a 184# Yellowfin on 20lb. tackle. More on this incredible angling feat next month! It's nearly summer and the fishing is very good so don't hesitate getting to Kona and booking a trip on the Krista. We hope we see you soon and remember..................... "Tight Lines"!

March 2007

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

March was a great month for big blue marlin, mahi-mahi and a few striped marlin and shortnose spearfish. WE had some great rips on the Krista this month and a couple which were bitter sweet as well. Take for example the potential grander that got away from our client John Evans after an epic 3 1/2 hour battle on a Penn International 50# outfit. Great angling by John and maybe we'll get a shot at her next month. In total, we caught numerous mahi-mahi on lures and ballyhoo, tagged and released six Blue Marlin up to 500#'s and many smaller tuna for the kids. Our last Blue Marlin release occured on March 31, when the "spunky" newlywed Margaret Kelley, battled the strong male for 17 mintues. A beautiful display of aerial jumps and strength will never be forgotten for these newlyweds!! The weather in March was absolutely terrific for the most part and we're expecting much of the same type of fishing and weather for April. By the way, a 1,046 # Blue Marlin was caught by one of our fellow charter boat skippers earlier in the month and many other strories of nig fish lost after long battles were told in the Kona charter fleet. We look forward to having you on board the Krista this yearfor a fun day on the water and great times. Book your trip(s) early as our calendar is filling rapidly. See you next month and remember............"Tight Lines"!

February 2007

Aloha Fellow Anglers,

February started out with miserable weather keeping most of the 100 boat charter fleet at the docks for nearly 7 days straight. It was some of the most terrible weather this captain has seen in 17 years but,...we are back to normal, wonderful, sunshine
Kona weather and the fish have responded in numbers. We've seen many striped marlin in the 40# - 100# class smashing our pattern and screaming out line as though they think they're much larger. These billfish are extremely healthy juveniles and our anglers have enjoyed some real fun fighting these guys on light tackle. We've also seen a number of blue marlin in the 100# - 250# class coming into the pattern and giving our anglers a trophy catch to remember! Recently an 840# blue was brought to the scales by one of our local charter boats and it was too bad that it died on them before it could be released. The "fall" blue marlin spawn is upon us and I know we're going to see some big ladies arriving in our pattern shortly. "Floater" fishing (man-made & natural debris) fishing has been marginal at best but last Saturday we founf a huge "log" that kept us and nearly the entire charterboat fleet busy with 20# - 70# yellowfin and bigeye tuna crashing and eating everything in site. There were
quite a few Mahi-Mahi around this floater and we were able to catch a few for dinner with one of the "Bull's" weighing in at approximately 45#'s. Great action and truly bloody decks!! We expect the wahoo to start showing soon and there are signs that they are on there way. Sunshine and deep blue water await you so don't waste time and book your next trip with Capt. "D" now. We'll see you soon and remind you to look for our March fishing report.
